Workplace Risk Assessments

Many businesses approach risk assessment as a documentation exercise — producing the required paperwork while treating the actual process as a

box-ticking formality. This misunderstands both what risk assessment is and what it achieves when done well.

A risk assessment conducted by a qualified professional provides far more than a compliant document. It provides a systematic, evidence-based understanding of where harm can occur in a business's operations, what controls genuinely reduce that risk, and whether those controls are working in practice.

The gap between these two approaches — documentation compliance versus genuine risk identification — is precisely where workplace injuries and enforcement action occur.

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires employers to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety, and welfare of their employees.

Risk assessment is the mechanism through which employers identify what "reasonably practicable" means for their specific operations.

Generic templates that could apply equally to any business in any sector cannot satisfy this standard.
